Cat Scratch Fever
When your cat scratches the furniture, you probably are not too happy about it. You may think that it is just an annoying thing they do, but in reality, they are actually improving their nail strength by taking off old layers and toning their muscles by stretching out.
It is a natural habit for a cat to scratch, so I do not suggest punishing them for it. (They will have no idea why you are yelling at them.) Instead of disciplining them, take the initiative to go out and buy an alternative object for your cat to scratch, such as a scratching post. If you go to different stores and compare prices, you will be able to find one of the best quality that is priced decently.
However, do not go to cheap with these scratching posts, because in the long run, you will need to replace it more often and this will result in your wallet losing the battle.
When you are searching for a good scratching post, make sure that it is a good height so that your cat gets a nice stretch when he uses it. When you finally buy it, be smart and place it directly in front of the piece of furniture that he normally attacks.
If he does not go to it right away, try making it look more appealing by putting cat toys on it, or even putting some cat nip on it to lure them over.
Do not get frustrated if your cat does not use the post right away. He is probably hesitant because he knows he usually gets punished for scratching things. Just give him time and I am sure that you will see less scratching on your furniture and more scratching on the post.
